Watchet is a historic harbour town and civil parish in the English region of Somerset, with a population of approximately 3,785. Located 15 miles (24 kilometres) west of Bridgwater, 15 miles (24 kilometres) northwest of Taunton, and 9 miles (14 kilometres) east of Minehead, Watchet sits at the mouth of the Washford River on Bridgwater Bay, part of the Bristol Channel, on the edge of Exmoor National Park.
The town’s history dates back to the Iron Age, with the settlement likely beginning at Daw’s Castle. Over time, the settlement relocated to the river’s mouth, where a small harbour was developed, known as “Gwo Coed,” meaning “Under the Wood.” After the Saxon conquest, Watchet grew into a prosperous community, despite enduring Viking attacks in the 10th century.
The harbour became a vital trade hub, facilitating the transport of goods, including those from the Wansbrough Paper Mill. In the 19th century, iron ore from the Brendon Hills was transported via the West Somerset Mineral Railway to Newport and then to the Ebbw Vale Steelworks. Watchet was also served by the West Somerset Railway, which brought goods and people to the Bristol and Exeter Railway. By the early 20th century, the iron ore trade declined, and the port transitioned to a smaller commercial trade before being transformed into a marina in 2000.
Watchet’s architectural heritage include the Church of Saint Decuman, believed to mark the site where Saint Decuman died around 706. An early church near Daw’s Castle was replaced by a 15th-century structure, which houses numerous monuments of the Wyndham family, the former lords of the manor. The harbourside also features a statue commemorating Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s famous poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, written in the local area.
Watchet’s housing stock ranges from traditional homes to contemporary builds. The most common roofing materials in the area include slate, clay tiles, and thatch, blending with the town’s heritage. Flat roofs are also popular on newer constructions, providing modern functionality.
The local climate, characterised by moderate rainfall and strong coastal winds, poses challenges for roofing. Typical issues include moss growth, damaged tiles, and blocked gutters. Regular maintenance and timely repairs help prevent costly damage.
For homeowners in Watchet seeking roofing solutions, choosing trusted experts is key. Local roofers use products from leading manufacturers like Marley, Redland, and Sandtoft, ensuring excellent results. Look for roofers affiliated with the NFRC (National Federation of Roofing Contractors) or TrustMark for assured quality workmanship.
Whether you’re fixing leaks, upgrading materials, or considering a complete renovation, Watchet is home to trusted tradespeople ready to assist. Submit your enquiry today for free quotes from qualified roofers, and protect your property with durable and attractive roofing solutions.
