Watchet is a charming coastal community and civil parish in the English region of Somerset, with a population of approximately 3,785. Located 15 miles (24 kilometres) west of Bridgwater, 15 miles (24 kilometres) northwest of Taunton, and 9 miles (14 kilometres) east of Minehead, Watchet sits at the mouth of the Washford River on Bridgwater Bay, part of the Bristol Channel, and is adjacent to Exmoor National Park.
The town’s history dates back to the Iron Age, with the settlement likely beginning at Daw’s Castle. Over time, the settlement relocated to the river’s mouth, where a small harbour was developed, known as “Gwo Coed,” meaning “Under the Wood.” After the Saxon conquest, Watchet developed into a thriving community, despite enduring Viking attacks in the 10th century.
The harbour became a vital trade hub, handling imports and exports, including those from the Wansbrough Paper Mill. In the 19th century, iron ore from the Brendon Hills was transported via the West Somerset Mineral Railway to Newport and then to the Ebbw Vale Steelworks. Watchet was also served by the West Somerset Railway, which brought goods and people to the Bristol and Exeter Railway. By the early 20th century, the iron ore trade subsided, and the port transitioned to a smaller commercial trade before being converted into a marina in 2000.
Watchet’s historic landmarks include the Church of Saint Decuman, believed to mark the site where Saint Decuman died around 706. An early church near Daw’s Castle was replaced by a 15th-century structure, which houses numerous monuments of the Wyndham family, the former lords of the manor. The harbourside also boasts a statue commemorating Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s famous poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, written in the local area.
Watchet’s residential properties ranges from traditional homes to modern developments. The typical roofs in the area include slate, clay tiles, and thatch, which complement the coastal aesthetic. Flat roofs are also frequently used on newer constructions, providing modern functionality.
The weather in Watchet, marked by consistent showers and occasional gusts, poses challenges for roofing. Common problems include moss growth, cracked slates, and blocked gutters. Regular inspections and timely repairs help prevent costly damage.
For homeowners in Watchet seeking roofing solutions, choosing trusted experts is key. Local roofers source high-quality materials from leading manufacturers like Marley, Redland, and Sandtoft, ensuring excellent results. Look for roofers certified by the NFRC (National Federation of Roofing Contractors) or TrustMark for peace of mind.
Whether you’re repairing storm damage, modernising your roof, or considering a complete renovation, Watchet offers access to skilled and vetted roofing professionals. Contact us now for no-obligation estimates from qualified roofers, and protect your property with durable and attractive roofing solutions.
