Chard is a town and civil parish in the English county of Somerset. It lies on the A30 road near the Devon border, 15 miles (24 km) South West of Yeovil. The parish has a population of roughly 13,000 and, at an elevation of 121 metres (397 ft), Chard is the southernmost and highest town in Somerset. Administratively, Chard forms a part of the district of South Somerset. The town’s name was recorded as Cerden in 1065 and Cerdre in the Domesday Book of 1086. Following the Norman Conquest, Chard was held by the Bishop of Wells. The town’s first charter was granted by King John in 1234. Chard is most famously referred to as the birthplace of powered flight, as in 1848, John Stringfellow first demonstrated that engine-powered flight was attainable. Percy and Ernest Petter, who later formed Westland Aircraft Works, witnessed some of Stringfellow’s demonstrations in Chard and frequently sought support in forming Westland’s initial aircraft development factory on the outskirts of Yeovil. Agusta Westland now hosts the Henson and Stringfellow lecture annually for the RAeS. Chard Reservoir, about a mile north east of the town, is a Local Nature Reserve, and Snowdon Hill Quarry is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest. Major employers in the the town include Numatic International Limited plus the Oscar Mayer food processing plant. You’ll find a range of sporting and cultural facilities, with secondary education provided at Holyrood Academy. Religious sites include the Church of St Mary the Virgin, which dates back to the late 11th century. Housing in Chard varies from period cottages to modern family homes, offering a blend of traditional charm and modern comfort. Roofing plays an important role in maintaining these homes, especially due to the area’s exposure to seasonal weather. Slate and clay tiles are common roofing materials in Chard, offering long-lasting protection and a classic look. Modern homes may feature contemporary flat roofs made from materials like EPDM rubber or fibreglass, providing energy-efficient options. Common roofing challenges in Chard include leaks caused by aging roofs, clogged gutters and drainage issues, and roofing wear from exposure to the elements. Local roofers in Chard offer a range of services for roof restorations, flat roof installations, and energy-efficient improvements. Affiliation with bodies like CompetentRoofer ensures high standards of service. Trusted suppliers such as Travis Perkins and brands like Marley provide top-quality products for roofing projects.
