Shaftesbury is a picturesque market town and civil parish in Dorset, England. Situated on the A30, 20 miles (32 km) west of Salisbury and close to the Wiltshire border, Shaftesbury is unique as Dorset’s only significant hilltop settlement. The town is positioned at an elevation of approximately 215 metres (705 ft) above water level, offering sweeping views of the Blackmore Vale and, on clear days, as far as Glastonbury Tor to the northwest. The town is steeped in history, being the home to Shaftesbury Abbey, founded in 888 by King Alfred the Great. Once one of the wealthiest religious institutions in England, the abbey was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539. Today, the abbey ruins draw visitors with a museum exploring its history. Adjacent to the abbey is Gold Hill, a famous cobbled street that gained national attention in the 1970s as the setting for Ridley Scott’s classic Hovis bread commercial. Today, Shaftesbury combines heritage with modern amenities. The housing stock varies between characterful cottages and period homes to more modern developments. Roofing in Shaftesbury typically features traditional materials such as slate and clay tiles, built to endure the sometimes challenging weather. As with many hilltop locations, roofs here are subject to high winds and heavy rain, leading to common issues such as leaks, cracked tiles, and moss accumulation. For homeowners in Shaftesbury, proactive care is essential and avoids costly repairs. Trusted local roofing professionals provide comprehensive solutions, from minor repairs to full roof installations. Many belong to organisations such as the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC), ensuring reliable results. It’s recommended to verify insurance coverage and ask for detailed estimates ahead of any project. Whether you’re restoring a historic roof or replacing your roof, try our quick online form to get quotes from qualified roofing professionals in Shaftesbury.
