we observed perished bedding mortar to joints to the ridge/hip tiles. re-pointing the joints is often not adequate enough maintenance, as the bedding has normally perished beneath. we, therefore, recommend that you have the hip/ridge tiles re-bedded in fresh cement mortar. the old cement will require removing from beneath the tiles prior to re-bedding.
there are some missing tiles to the roof and these could be addressed at the same time by the roofer by replacing them. we would also recommend for the roofer to lift a few tiles to check underneath the tiles if there are any rotten battens as the underside of the roof in the loft was covered with aluminium foil.
the roof covering is slightly vegetated with moss. this needs to be cleaned off occasionally to prevent it from accumulating and then falling into the rainwater gutters. otherwise, this can cause blockages to occur in the rainwater gutters, as well as affect the aesthetic appearance of the building. this work should not be necessary more often than approximately every 10 years or so. the cement verge to the gable end requires re-pointing. the old cement should be chopped out and replaced, to help prevent rainwater penetration internally and rot to the roofing timbers.
there are open chimney pots visible. this could result in rainwater penetration causing damp patches to appear within the building. birds can also become trapped in disused flues. it is therefore recommended that redundant flues are fitted with capping vents and that flues serving appliances are fitted with cowls, subject to the appropriate specialist advice as mentioned under the heading of ‘services’. a closer inspection of the chimney can be made by the contractor, who should carry out any other necessary repairs that cannot be seen from ground level.
some repointing is required. repointing walls of the property, including chimneys, should be carried out with a lime- based mortar to allow the bricks to breathe and help prevent them from perishing easily. the brickwork should be raked out to a depth of 2cm, prior to any work being carried out, to create a good key for the new lime-based mortar.
there are small areas of perished masonry. masonry perishes as a result of dampness that penetrates into the chimney and then expands during periods of frost, causing the surface of the masonry to break away. once the fair face of brickwork or stonework has perished, degradation accelerates as the areas that have perished become more absorbent. works to this part of the property are likely to require the erection of scaffolding

Maldon is a town on the Blackwater Estuary in the English county of Essex. It constitutes the seat of the Maldon District and marks the start of the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation. According to the 2011 Census, it has a population of around 14,220. With its rich history and prime location, Maldon is a picturesque destination with a thriving community.
The town’s historical roots trace back to the East Saxons, who made their very first settlement in the region throughout the Fifth century. Maldon soon came to be a key Saxon port with a hythe or quayside and artisan quarters. Archaeological evidence highlights the port’s success, with discoveries such as imported pottery and the establishment of a royal mint from 958, issuing coins for Anglo-Saxon and Norman kings. Well-known for Maldon Sea Salt, which has been produced since 1882, the town also hosts a range of events such as the annual Maldon mud race and the unique ‘Taxi Day’ for children with special educational needs.
For homeowners in Maldon, the town’s mix of period properties, modern developments, and riverside homes presents a range of roofing needs. Whether you own a charming period property or a modern family house, maintaining your roof is essential to preserve the home’s value and character.
Given Maldon’s coastal location and variable weather, roofing solutions must account for the damp climate, seasonal storms, and environmental exposure. Common issues in the area include moss and algae growth, leaks from worn tiles, and gutter blockages. Regular maintenance and timely repairs are critical to protecting your home and ensuring its structural integrity.
Roofing materials suited to Maldon’s homes include clay tiles for their traditional charm and resilience. Heritage properties often benefit from innovative materials alongside classic systems to meet aesthetic and functional needs. Local suppliers provide everything needed for both minor upgrades and complete replacements.
To ensure the highest standards, employ reliable contractors in Maldon. Accredited roofers, such as those certified by other reputable trade associations, deliver expert craftsmanship for all roofing needs.
Whether restoring a historic property, upgrading a riverside home, or addressing storm damage, trusted contractors provide bespoke services to enhance and protect your property. Submit your enquiry today to connect with skilled roofers in Maldon.
